Another big change in Nokia, and another new company created by old Nokians. Newkia was created by Finnish Thomas Zilliacus, who worked 15 years in Nokia as the Asia-Pacific CEO. Newkia is planning to launch “Nokia-like” Android phone in a years time, with help of a R&D team in Finland. Company itself will be based in Singapore.
Zilliacus goes to add some interesting details. Mobile FutureWorks investment company he has been working for past years, was actually trying to buy Nokia a year ago, but it wasn’t able to raise enough funds to do so. He also talks about Nokia’s iPhone like prototype, 4 years before iPhone. He has prototype of that device on his drawer. He doesn’t tell us what kind of UI or OS its running, quite a important detail.
Will this be much else than trying to ride on the Nokia brand? Time will tell, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Also, there must be Chinese fake phone called Newkia somewhere.
Thanks for the tip Heikki!
