Jolla phone release moved to end of 2013, announcement happening soon

jolla_3

Some bad news, yet probably not all too surprising. Jolla has been vague about the supposed summer release of their first device and now CEO of Jolla, Marc Dillon has officially confirmed that Jolla is aiming to release the phone before Christmas in Finland and in China before Chinese New Year. A bit of a change of the summer release target.

We will release the device and the details as soon as possible, probably in March or April. It is important to publish the product on time in order to be ready for distribution when the device enters the market. - Marc Dillon

Then lets talk more about the device. According to Dillon they are looking at the markets outside of Finland and China, like you would expect. According to Dillon there’s multiple options open for them there. To question will Jolla announce multiple devices, Dillon simply answers that they already have ready product roadmap laid out.

When it comes to price Dillon mentions their phone to be premium smartphone, yet it’s not on the very highest price category. Again, Jolla certainly has its targets set high and oh so familiar to anybody who follows Nokia.

Sailfish comes right after them (Android and iOS). We have the most interesting package just now and our system is all different from everybody else. - Marc Dillon

Great, now we have another company singing that 3rd ecosystem mantra. ;) Dillon still wishes no bad for the Finnish giant and would be more than ready to license Sailfish for Nokia as well. He also claims that there has been a lot of interest from other manufacturers, but doesn’t name them.

No thanks, not while current management resides at Nokia, they should stay very far away until that group retires or is replaced. There’s heaps of other OEM/ODM/Carriers etc. that they can collaborate with, it’s a huge world…

    What a sad, sad, joke… Jolla’s done, good-bye…

I guess after experiencing the constant lows and up of Maemo/MeeGo project for 5 years i have taken laid-back attitude with these kind of projects. :)
The device will come out when it will and when it does i will see if i have any reason to get it.

I don’t believe that the Q1 announcement and long wait till release is bad for open source project like this. It’s naturally different story when we are talking about big, established brands that has already solid foundation to build on, but Jolla needs to show to developers and investors that there’s something physical to wait and code for.

Thing i fear most with this is just how competitive will the hardware be when it comes out. If we are to find something positive out of this it could be that they moved upwards on their roadmap. Like it happened with Nokia’s Dali and Lankku.
Granted i’m not sure they have resources for that and keeping ~Q1 announcement doesn’t support that.

Showing devs/investors means almost nothing, having a abundance of devices (all similarly specc’d) from which devs can USE (instead of just emulators) is far better than that, on that front they’re a total fail compared to Ubuntu.

“Granted i’m not sure they have resources for that and keeping ~Q1 announcement doesn’t support that.”

Yup, total fail, I’m calling it here, it’ll be a very mediocre SoC, & they’ll use the mantra that: “hw doesn’t matter when the code is optimised for the hw”, pffft, losers.

There was a good article on PCmag recently (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413778,00.asp) about the hurdles these small open source companies have delivering hardware on time. That device in the end is what embodies the product and the OS. So as the situation is what it is, Jolla should imo announce the phone as early as it is possible.

Naturally i would like to see devs units out there.

Personally don’t agree with the logic at all, but you’re entitled to your opinion, ofc.

          • jalyst

Besides, as it is, Ubuntu will now have their hw out before Jolla…
Assuming Jolla don’t get theirs out by or before Oct, & assuming Canonical is able to stick to their Oct. claim.

Sentence structure, punctuation, grammar etc. really help when you want people to read/understand what you’re saying. I can “just” comprehend it, but others will struggle.
