Lumia 920 screen is easily one of the highlights of Lumia 920. What not to like about that PureMotion HD+ 331 ppi, Clear Black Display, 60HZ refresh rate, IPS and more that you can read from Nokia’s PureMotion whitepaper.
Sunlight legibility was amazing on all the previous Clear Black displays, but it’s likely Lumia 920 will be superior in this compared to any other phone. It wont be achieved by luck as Nokia has made own testing lab for just this purpose called light room.
We joke about tanned Nokia employee that have not necessarily been under the sun on their vacation, but spend long hourson the light room. – Chief Technology Officer Jussi Ropo
Clear Black display technology will still work as the base on Lumia 920 by reducing reflections and improving visibility under light. Some of the additions on Lumia 920 are 20% increases screens surface brightness under strong sunlight. Just amping the brightness doesn’t still take you far so much of the work has gone towards algorithms that do slight changes on the screen live so details are more clear and sharp.
On high brightness mode the LED display is 20 percent brighter than usual, and consumes 20 percent more power.
On the other hand, we estimate that the user is only 5-10 percent of the time in conditions where high brightness space is needed. That’s why it does not add significantly to the overall power consumption. – Jussi Ropo
High brightness mode goes on only under intense light.
Nokia promises that you will see a more of innovation from Nokia’s light room in the future as well. So stay tune!
