Jolla will incorporate ACL technology

Back from 2 days vacation before university starts, so lets start with a day or two old Jolla news.

Jussi Hurmola (CEO of Jolla) doesn’t yet wanna go out and say that there’s direct Android support for applications on Jolla, but you will find ACL technology inside Jolla’s phone. So what is ACL about you might ask?

ACL™ – Application Compatibility Layer. ACL is a powerful technology that enables the 450,000+ Android App ecosystem to seamlessly run on other platforms.

Just remember that the above doesn’t mean mean you will suddenly have Android Store on your Jolla phone. It will make it much easier for developers to put their applications available fro Jolla. Jolla will have it’s own centered application store.

Our user interface is more modern than the Android and iPhone. They have remained static for five years. – Hurmola

There was also one more hardware hints in this T3 article. Hurmola admits that 3,5inch screen feels small these days. It would not be much of a surprise to expect Jolla’s phone to have at least 4inch screen.

Maemo and MeeGo has always pushed the screen sizes and resolutions compared to rest of Nokia’s line up. Thanks to the OS and the target market.

This is just FUD from OpenMobile, jussa himself denied it shortly after it came out:

Even that video is ancient, it’s not even close to real MeR/Nemo etc, it’s being demoed on a much older build of meego for tablets.
OpenMobile have a long history of attaching themselves to each & every F/OSS project, but never actually delivering anything.
Latest “speculation” is that Jolla will be leveraging BBX & iOS apps (alongside the wider Qt & HTML5 ecosystems ofc, which are just as important & probably the main focus).
There’s an iOS app compat layer of sorts that RIM’s been working on that Jolla may use or copy, not sure if it’s terribly F/OSS.

Bah, so this news actually didn’t come from Jolla directly? Saw multiple news all around right after coming back from holidays on this.
And yes the video is old, but still one of the best showcases of ACL.

This Android compatibility layer was attached to N900 and N9/N950 right when they where announced. At the time of N9 i already did understand not to expect it or wait for it.

Yeah IMO OpenMobile are scam artists….
If you followed several+ threads relating to them & similar projects at TMO/FMC you’ll know what I mean.

Personally I don’t care about Android apps. I want strong support for Qt and Linux. What interests me too is to have ARM with NEON on-board.

    • jalyst

      What’s Neon?
Think I’ve read about it, but I forget what it is now.

      I agree with you.
But Jolla will still need to sell it’s devices in some kind of volume to stay alive and i don’t think the pure Qt, nerd community can sustain them. At that point they will need to have decent application library.
If people thought Nokia was doing shoddy work getting games and some of it’s home grown applications to N9/N950… it wont be any easier for the 50-100 employees Jolla team.

Granted Jolla’s phone wont be starting from zero thanks to N9/N950 and the existing Qt community.
