Nokia sells around 500 patents for $22 million

You can thank Nokia for it’s ceramic and integrated antennas when it’s competitors where still using antennas outside the phone

Nokia has sold above 500 patents to Vringo for $22 million. Most of the patents are related to mobile phone network technologies and are dating back to 90′s and early 2000. Average period of validity for the patents being 6,7 years.
Nokia’s whole patent portfolio is quite hard to grasp as Nokia has licensed quite nice chunk of patents to “patent trolls” that will more aggressively look for customers, but will take certain amount of the profits.

Nokia is dominating the mobile industry on its patent portfolio that ranges from several breakthrough technologies in antennas, essential WiFI patents all the way to UI patents.
In Q2 2012 Nokia made 400 million euros from it’s patents alone. Last year Nokia filed almost record number of patents, only beaten by 2007.
