Siilasmaa: WP8 is where it’s at, why didn’t Nokia go for Android

Siilasmaa, the newly appointed Chairman of Nokia’s board of directors opened his mouth for the first time yesterday after taking his current position, giving his full support to Elop. Though he also gave interview to Helsingin Sanomat on today’s newspaper giving us new comments.

We have said from the start that WP8 is the first version where Nokia has truly made it’s mark. That means we truly believe to the success of our products. – Siilasmaa

Devices were subjected to software and that revolutionized the market. We saw the challenges, but the scope of it all was a surprise to us. – Siilasmaa

Nokia had multiple concept videos and talk from execs that really did reflect the market we have today in smartphone before we saw iPhone.
Nokia had all the talent and money to do whatever it wanted, but when the change came from the “outside” so fast Nokia was likely not prepared to just what it had to do, example in Symbian where AVKON was hopelessly outdated. Nokia bought Trolltech in 2008 and started the work to bring Qt to mobile devices.

Stephen came in to the company by the time of the collapse. At that point it was impossible to turn the curse of Symbian. We had to think what was to be best OS for Nokia. There was two options, Android or Windows. – Siilasmaa

Pretty much nobody makes it as a good business other than Samsung (on Android). Nokia has been said to be arrogant after the enormous success, and absolutely rightly so. I think it would have been truly arrogant to believe that Nokia could have beaten Samsung and others on the Android market automatically. – Siilasmaa
