It’s common that the manufacturing is outsourced in this industry, most famous being Apple that owns non of the manufacturing. Nokia is actually quite rare case in this as it owns it’s own factories. We already knew that Lumia 800 manufacturing was outsourced to Compal, Niklas Savander who is a Executive Vice President of the Markets in Nokia seems to say that the Lumia 800 will continue to be made by Compal.
Lumia was 800 Compals doing, mostly because we wanted to get out of the phone quickly and they had the experience of Qualcomm’s chips
We’ve always had a variable number of contract manufacturers, which are to ease the load, and also bring special expertise. – Savander
This time the special expertise was about the Qualcomm platform that Nokia has never been fan of, rather using it’s long time partner Texas Instruments. That said Savander says that Lumia 710 manufacturing is already done by Nokia and this will be the case for other Windows Phones too.
Already the next Lumia 710 was made in a Nokia factory. There is nothing dramatic in this. We believe still that smartphones and basic phones in particular we will have advantage on our own production. – Savander
That i know that Lumia 710 has had less of a problems with the sound quality and the famous battery bug that Lumia 800 had before the update. It’s another story what can be traced to be because of the faster launch of Lumia 800 and what where exactly Compals area of responsibility.
