Rumor: Nokia 808 PureView to have dual core

This rumor is from a anonymous tipster on nokiapoweruser, so take the information below as you like.

  • N8 successor aka 808 pure view will have two processor cores(Dual core)
  • It will have Lumia 900′s design language.
  • N9 like display where icons seems to float on the surface.

- So far pretty much the only comments Dsmobile has made about the design has been that it will have polycarbonate build and will feature battery cover. Use of 900 as a example, rather than N9/800 tips it to be flat surfaced screen and indeed polycarbonate build. That said i’m not sure how would that battery cover exactly work in that design.

- Floating icons mean that the display is glued to the Gorilla Glass, similar to N9.

- The dual core question raises again. Pretty much every other rumor has stated N8 successor to have dual core. Even the original source (symbianlatino) of the leaked picture of Carla and Donna specifications said N8 successor to have dual core back in November last year.

What of course makes this confusing is that the picture he himself leaked said that Donna would only support dual core processors and yet he said that we would get dual core Symbian phone in 2012. Be it the last Symbian phone or not , it will most probably be one of the last high end Symbian phones so some dual core love would certainly make it’s lifespan longer and indeed enable such things as 1080 video recording (while these might be achieved with 1GHz single core and powerful GPU). I’am myself highly skeptical it will have dual core.

It could that only Dorna will be dual core enabled but the dual core in Carla will be used for specific tasks ie 1080p recording.

    • Nokiagadgets

That’s actually quite interesting take on it.
If the 808 is the last high end Symbian phone it could be that down the road Nokia would open more of the UI to support dual core.

The Broadcom GPU used in the newer born-with-Belle devices like the 700, 701 and 603, is actually capable of 1080p out of the box – it is just not used. So the 808 could just as well have exactly the same chipset as the 700/701/603 and achieve 1080p.

Heard this over and over so did finally some research on this. The
BROADCOM BCM 2763 seems to be very capable GPU indeed. Nokia just decided to cheapen it on those mid end Belle devices. It would make a lot of sense if Nokia used the same GPU… hopefully they include HDMI out as well, something BCM 2763 fully supports.

Would not mind them overclocking the core a bit over the 1GHz seen now on ARM11.

Is the entire SoC likely to be Broadcom or only the GPU?
If it’s TI a “hackish” port of Maemo6x may be possible.

There’s already a dev board for ST-E’s u8500 that can serve as a solid basis for a Maemo port to it.
Some folks starting to look into it now…..

          • Nokiagadgets

Only GPU by Broadcom, TI SoC.

Aye, U8500 has snowball dev board.

I would have believed these rumors about dual core cpus, as Nokia also told back in 2010 that there will be dual core phones in Q4 2011/ Q1 2012. But since dsmobile said the hardware of the 808 is just 2.1 (2.0 for 701,700) i am quite skeptical now.

WAY before any talk of Symbian Foundation or such, Symbian was supposed to get huge update that enabled dual core… whole update just seemed to be forgotten and then we got the Symbian Foundation that seemed to do nothing good in the end.

Actually it’s funny that that the U8500 was talked already back in 2009.
      http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/009/06/multiprocessing_arm_cortex-a9_running_symbian_os.htm

That SoC has pretty much followed rumors of every Nokia flagship sine 2009, last being N9. :D U8500 was actually one of the two ARM reference platforms for MeeGo handheld UX.

Guys over at ST-Ericsson must not be feeling the love as they have had to follow this mess of a OS’s Nokia has gone trough.

      • jalyst

If MeeGo was kept, we would’ve seen the 3rd Maemo6x ph utilizing U8500 or another OMAP4-based SoC.
        That’s if the 3rd Maemo6x device was needed….
        It was intended as a stop-gap, in case 1st/2nd Medfield’s weren’t deliverable until H1 2012.
It seems like it would’ve been needed, so we would’ve seen it arriving on shelves by now.

Symbian can’t work with Dual cores. Forget that. Symbian also can’t work with higher resolution screens. The same is true for Windows Phone. Windows Phone currently doesn’t run on Dual-cores and max. resolution of Windows phone is 800×480.

The change that M$ will increase that are slim as they’d probably switch to Intel-based phones with Windows 8 in future. Windows 8 already support multiple cores and higher resolutions and will be INCOMPATIBLE with ALL present Windows Phone devices on the market (even the ARM-version)! MARK my words!

      • Nokiagadgets

We already know 7.x wont be increasing specs.
I recommend to read a bit more about WOA because you are overly simplifying WOA and Windows Phone 8 relationship. Much of WOA’s fine details are not know either. Might wanna check out Windows weekly podcast.

That said i tend to agree with you on Symbian, with the expectetion that there will be actual N8 successor with a ARM11 core and higher end GPU.

      • henrikweide

“Symbian also can’t work with higher resolution screens.”

That is simply not true. The ultimate proof is actually quite simple. 1. The E6 has 640×480 resolution. 2. More importantly – if you download the Big Screen app for the N8 and connect it to HDMI on your HD tv, you have 1280×720 native resolution coming right out of the N8.

  • Discusszmr

Whatever it be but I would be the 1st one in the town to grab if is a real successor of N8 with dual core.

  • http://twitter.com/epdm2be El Pipo Don Manolo

Symbian can’t work Dual core. This is BS.
Just as Symbian can’t work with higher resolutions then nHD 640×360

The N8′s successor will use same case as the Lumia 800. Maybe with another cutout for a 4rd (unlock-)button, It’s display will be the same 3.9″ display as the N9 (because it doesn’t need the bottom 4 keys like Windows phone). Probably in 16GB or 32GB versions (without SD-card expansion). I doubt a 64Gb version will appear as this will cripple the sales of Lumia 800/900

And more importantly it will use the same camera as N9 with LED-flash.

Don’t get your hopes up. Nokia will NOT design a specific Symbian model anymore. It’ll just recycle present designs. In essence the N8′s successor will be an N9 with Symbian. Just as the 701 is the same design as the C7. Forget about xenon flash, it’s too expensive.

    Specs will be this:

    ARM 11 1GHz CPU (same as 701)
    same GPU as 701
    same 512MB as 701
amoled screen nHD 640×360 resolution because Symbian can’t handle higher resolution
N9 case (which means  NO SD-card expansion)
    N9 camera with dual LED-flash
16/32GB RAM (IF there would be a 64GB version then that would kill sales of Lumia-series so for commerciall reasons they can’t do that)
    MicroSIM

    It’ll run Belle.
Price will be higher then Lumia 800 (again not to harm sales of Lumia and to make sure it won’t sell great) just like Nokia did with N9, start around 599 euros (unlocked)

Before you act like you know what you’re talking about.
It’s always a good idea to have a solid knowledge of past & most recent history.
A lot of what you’ve spewed indicates that you don’t…
